Anna Andrew Temu

Chair and Founder, Sokoine University Graduate Enterprises Cooperative Society (SUGECO)

What most impressed the professional colleagues who nominated this role model?

Anna Temu’s innovative thinking on how to impart practical skills to young graduates and help them become self-employed has caught the attention of government, financial institutions and developing partners by storm.  Through SUGECO, young graduates are encouraged to learn key business skills including how to write bankable business proposals for banks and secure loans to start businesses. Her success at SUGECO has motivated Government to pledged Tshs 10bill ($600,000) in a meeting of SUGECO with the Prime Minister and 7 other Ministers in 2014, to support capacity building of her Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness at SUA, Banks interested to support youth in Agribusiness and SUGECO.

What motivated you to pursue a career in agriculture?

  • I grew up on a family farm and developed a passion to work in agriculture.
  • I later found that agriculture is more than farming and that it can be a business just like other types of businesses.

How can agricultural education institutions more effectively prepare African students for successful agribusiness careers?

  • Encourage dynamic, innovative programs that address current needs and problems.  Factor this practical innovation into the academic review processes.
  • University-level agricultural institutions need to maintain close links to the people they serve – including farmers, students and agribusinesses.
  • Training institutions should support and encourage faculty to come up with innovative ways of doing things.
  • Institutional incentive systems need to cultivate a culture of pro-active innovation.  This may require a parallel track within the academic system.  To keep this work sustainable and self-sustaining, these practical innovations must be rewarded as well.
