Cripsin Mangaki

Horticulture Farmer

What most impressed the professional colleagues who nominated this role model?

Crispin Mangaki is a highly successful horticulture farmer from Chongwe.   Starting with only half an acre of land, he has grown his farming business to 200 acres.  The high profits from horticulture production have enabled him to invest in pumps and an extensive drip irrigation system.  With the proceeds from his horticulture sales (particularly tomatoes), he has built twelve houses for rental purposes and also purchased two trucks.  Despite only a primary school education, he has sent all 17 of his children to school. Currently, he supplies over 400 boxes of tomatoes every day to Lusaka’s Soweto market, making him one of the capital city’s largest tomato suppliers.

What motivated you to pursue a career in agriculture?

  • My father was a farmer in Chongwe District and that motivated me to take agriculture as a career. He gave half an acre of land, and so as a young man I started growing crops like rape, cornflower, onion, cabbages, green-beans, peas, cucumbers and tomatoes.  From the proceeds, I was able to buy clothes and other personal things.  I first got my own land in 2006 which was traditional land from the Headman. The size of the land I bought was about 40 acres.  Later, I expanded and purchased 200 acres in Makeni.

How can agricultural education institutions more effectively prepare African students for successful agribusiness careers?

  • Farming is very dynamic. It is difficult for a farmer to go out to teach in these institutions. The best these institutions can do is to send their students on attachment with their local farmers. For example, these students should be given a chance to manage a block of a crops from land preparation to marketing of the crop with supervision from the farmer. That way, students would appreciate what goes on at the farm.
